South African Sojourn

For years I have been intrigued by the largest and oldest inhabited continent on the planet, the melting pot of culture and civilization from time immemorial, the home to the wildest and the gentlest – Africa. The only time I have stepped in it was as a teenager, when my parents took me to Egypt, and I distinctly remember being stunned by all what it had to offer, even at that young age. So, when my cousin mentioned he wanted to go someplace interesting for the Eid holidays this year, the idea of southern Africa sprung to mind immediately. Given my recent travels and affinity towards spending hours on message…

The Nikaah.

Sisters are a blessing.  I imagine if I had one of my own, I’d never feel the need of a best friend.  As far as memory takes me, the word always made me think of Pooja. She’s my first cousin and I met her once a year while on summer holidays. Those memories will last me a lifetime.  Spending afternoons listening to the radio and giggling.  Devouring watermelon and pomegranate sitting on the verandah grill, with our feet dangling. Hour long community baths.  Sharing scandalous secrets. Staying up nights and talking for hours.  Baking home made pizza. Jointly complaining about that one evil MamiJi. Shopping for trinkets.  Colour coordinating for…

Winter Wonderland

It’s Christmas!  I might be one of the few people on the planet at their work desks today, but I will let nothing dampen the spirit! I’m going to listen to the Christmas radio, sing along loudly, walk down to the bakery for some plum cake and go back home to watch Home Alone 1, 2, 3 and then Love Actually – in that order! For now, unable to contain the Christmas in the air, here are my top six favourite Christmas songs – that can cheer me up and get me thinking of a white Christmas, with peppermint striped candy and real snow.  “Let It Snow!” by Dean Martin …

Happiness Is…

I’m sure we’ve all been inundated by the ‘Happiness Is…’ posts on Facebook – little things that make people happy demonstrated by a cartoon representation.  While I didn’t associate with most because several of them were personally generated. For example: Happiness is… having confidence to take over the world. Not.  Trying to stay close to reality here, here are a couple of things that make me happy. Unconditionally happy.  So, to me – happiness is… – Sitting alone in a cafe with a book and my thoughts. Of course the right company only adds  – Floating with eyes shut in a pool when there’s no one around – Thunderstorms –…

Person Of Interest

Lately, I’ve been overdosing on television shows.  I used to be faithful to good old Criminal Minds, and flirt with Game of Thrones for a bit and then follow it up with Lie to Me, with a hint of Bones thrown in.  Now I’m all over the place.  Afraid to finish Criminal Minds and Bones, thinking what would happen once I got to the end, halfway through the first season of Elementary, waiting the endless wait for Season 3 of Sherlock while hoping for House of Cards to get their act together and bring back Kevin Spacey and the hot Robin Wright, disturbed by what was happening to Carrie in…

Mughal Grandiose

I had lived in the national capital for almost three years, but had never visited the best known monument which lay only 200 kilometres from Delhi in a historic setting left behind by the illustrious Mughals. This Eid holiday, Milan and I paid a visit to Agra and tick the Taj Mahal off our bucket lists. The decision making process was not so simple, however J When we decided to take a holiday together, we settled on a beach destination because both of us needed to get away. From the monotony, the pressures and the voices. Our first choice was the Maldives and weeks of planning went into it, a…

Delhi October

Getting started with the November project, I wanted the first post to be about something happy that I am thankful for. When I first heard that the Eid-ul-Adha holidays in Oman were going to be a week long (Yay for living in Oman – UAE only got three days 😛), my first reaction was to pledge that I wouldn’t stay in and mope about the lack of exciting things to do. After a series of elaborate plans didn’t work out (more on those on the next post), I decided that October would be a great time to visit Delhi and catch up with some of the people there. After all,…

Adventure is out there!

I hate to interrupt the Europe series, but they take a while to write and I simply cannot contain the excitement of what was probably the most eventful weekend in the past year!  Most of my weekends are just two days where I do nothing according to routine, just to challenge the monotony of everyday (Read: Sleep late, wake up late, eat, read, sleep, watch series, eat and then go grocery shopping) – and if ever I get a chance to do something even remotely thrilling, laziness gets the better of me. So when Rebecca (RJ, because there is another Rebecca involved in this story – we will call her…

Day 14# “These Are A Few Of My Favourite Things”

The first thing that came to my mind when I read today’s topic was the delightful number from my all time favourite film ‘The Sound of Music’. While bright copper kettles and girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes will not make my list of ten things that make me really happy, the following have an almost magical effect, bringing an immediate smile to my face. There are many more then ten – but these are the first which came to my mind: Cupcakes. Instant cheer-up-ers Ma & Baba. They are not things, but they make me the happiest. Doing laundry. Especially if it was in a room like…
