I.S.W.K.

The weekend before last I was in Dubai and met friend/classmate/bench-partner Yukti after almost a decade.  And of course, we talked about school. I don’t remember having spoken about it in forever. There was never an opportunity to. Except when people asked – and the whole cycle of laughing at a school named ‘The Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir’ began. I don’t blame them 🙂 I consider myself one of the fortunate people who spent all of school life in the same institution, watched new things happen in and around it, and became a little part of the family. In a place like Muscat in the 90’s, distractions and…

Roots

Where do you come from? What do you look back to? What will you always remember? After a lot of years have passed. Let us go back. To the times. To the dreams. To the careless laughter. To bruised knees. To the sound of waves. And memories. Roots are important. They define you. That’s why its important to go back to them From time to time. *** आओ, उसे याद करें – जिस नीव पर खड़े.आओ, अब लौट चलें – अपनी जड़ से जुड़ें.                                     Jad Se Judein by Loreal Paris India | For Ma…

Day 23# We Don’t Need No Education

Personally, I love learning new things and even text book education has sometimes intrigued me. Not being one of the 90+ mark achieving students in school, and having received judgemental scorns from family members about my average grades, I’ve had a thing or two to say about the school education I received. All rote and no learn was never my thing. Anyway – on a lighter note, there are a LOT of things that school doesn’t teach us. Actually, those are the things that no one can teach us – we just have to step into the world and see its mysteries unravel. So here are the top-of-my-mind four things…

The Withdrawn Mathematician

Muscat, for me is so packed with memories that there is probably no such place that I can go to without being reminded that this is the place where I grew up.  Just this morning, on my way to work I spotted a man who looked like someone I knew. Identifying an uncanny resemblance, I twisted in my seat to get a better look as the car whooshed past. Hoping that it might just be him. My math teacher. Who, to me was one of the best educators one could have. A solitary man who lived a living as simple as simple could be. His entire life revolved around his…

Contemplations

A feeling of ‘new-ness’ all around me, and sometimes I cannot decipher whether it makes me happy or otherwise. It has been around two months that I have shifted base (quite literally) over to Gurgaon, Haryana, and am still not accustomed with the changes it has brought. • Joined work. Check. • Got my second, first paycheck. Check. • Met new people. Check. • Visited relatives. Check. • Started to eat dabba food. Check. • Travelled in the almost non-existent public transport. Check. • Refreshed my i pod with more Tamil music. Check. • Strengthened my belief in Global Warming. Double check. • Pizza became a staple diet. Check. •…
