Secrets and Lies

“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” – George Orwell.
I spent all of last week watching the American crime series – Criminal Minds. Usually not a huge fan of gore, there was something about it that kept me gripped. The series follows a team of profilers from the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) based in Quantico, Virginia who determine the cause of a crime from the pov of the criminal and then proceed to catch him.
Mark Twain said “Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel. He is the only one who inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing it.” Apart from reinforcing the fact that our species is among the most vicious and heartless, it brought to mind so many thoughts.
One of the bits I really liked about the series is that almost every episode of Criminal Minds begins and ends with a quote.
A quote attributed to Rose Kennedy said “It has been said that time heals all wounds. I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue, and the pain lessens, but it is never gone.” Episode on episode, heinous crimes were unravelled, lives were lost – others saved in the nick of time, and friendships grew.
It also has a very interesting background track usage. At the start of an episode Enya’s Boadicea began to play and the impact it has is beyond words.
Friedrich Nietzsche is quoted to say “When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks into you.” I never thought of it before, but I have felt it happen.
