Invictus

I’ve always found poetry to be my favourite form of literature. Especially the sorts which have stories to tell in just four lines and keep you thinking for days after you read them. A friend shared this poem today and in light of some recent events, I thought they were some of the most beautiful and empowering verses I have read. Life hurls before us many choices – on making some we may feel delight or regret. It also brings forth several situations where we don’t have a say. Nothing can be done but be washed over by circumstance like a hapless bystander. What I find important here is that…

Mobility

Some things come easily to people, others you have to fight for.  Fight. Fall. Cry. Get up and dust off the dirt. Fight again.  My battle was what is seemingly trivial to most people around the globe – mobility.  For as long as I can remember, I have hated to ask people to take me to places, absolutely despised not being able to do things because I needed to depend on others. And throughout those years, I have fought, but it wasn’t simple. When I spent almost a year attempting to get a driving license in Oman, I wasn’t surprised that this too had hurdles. I complained to friends who…

Nothing’s Impossible

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had a guardian angel? A Cinderella-sort-of fairy godmother who could make wishes come true? It seems that nothing is too far from reality in today’s times. I was introduced today to a new social networking application called Impossible.com. Backed by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, and model Lily Cole it is being presented as an altruism-based social network that work towards making people’s dreams and wishes come true. In any way that they can.  Need a travel buddy to go Easter Island? Wish.  Know how to throw the best hen parties? Say you can.  Had a wish answered? Thank. I can assume what most people’s…

Day 8# Word To The Wise…

Today is about a bit of counsel for those who follow this blog. Being preachy is not really my style, but sometimes I do get in the mood and surprise myself.  I’m going to write about something I feel deeply about, and have mentioned to a lot of people who I felt would get help and/or relief from it.  Commonly known as the ‘think before you speak/act‘, and taking it a step forward – I urge my friends, family and acquaintance to think about the belief that what goes around, comes around. From times of old, we Indians have believed in ‘Karma’ – the cycle of cause and effect.  So…

The Elusive Divine

India is a land of diversity. I often find myself explaining to people how diverse we actually are.   Out of the multitude of languages, cultures, religions and beliefs, what interests me most is how we are able to maintain our secularist nature.   For over years, countries have fought over a religion or two. We have over 35,000 gods in the Hinduism sect. The magnitude of the coexistence is indeed awe-inducing.   Having thought about this subject several times over, I do not consider myself a devout  practitioner of any particular religion. I was born a Hindu and that is what I have grown up with. But never have I…

Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus

Today marks eighteen years to the day that the bespectacled boy-who-lived, discovered who he was, and there has no looking back ever-since! It has also been a year to the release of the final installment of the cinematic counterpart also came to an epic close. It was a rather emotional moment, causing me to write this post.   But the years have passed, and we have been made to believe that Harry is now grown up, married and says goodbye to his children on Platform Nine and Three Quarters. Somewhere deep inside, there are some of us who are still in a vacuum, uninterested to move on – from the eleven year old Harry…

Rise

Fiction and fantasy books are much more than some people credit them to be. They let your imaginations run. They make you believe. They make you learn good from bad. They are much more. This post derives inspiration from the much anticipated and recently released final installment of the Batman trilogy. I have not been an ardent a fan of the series – so much that I very recently watched Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Not to say that I was blown away – but I was stirred. Even with my limited knowledge of film-making, I can safely comment that Christopher Nolan is a genius. Although TDKR doesn’t have the…

New Diary

The goodbyes are always the most difficult. I’ve done this year on year, and although I believe I have grown stronger, it shakes me up to think that tomorrow this time, I wont be here. Not in this room, not in this country. Not with the people I care for most. Sometimes, I wonder to myself – they years are so precious and we spend them trying to prove all kinds of things to ourselves and others. In twenty years from today, will there be any regrets? And how would I console myself if there are. Choices are aplenty and I do not understand why I choose to do what…

This is the thing

I’ve been quite the fool And you’ve quietly let me I am lonely And you see me fight it alone I know you cause me pain And I should colour you black I try to wrench you open And every single time I fail I’ve no fight left in me But the eyes blazed with ambition and confidence I don’t know if you’ve even noticed at all That lately the eyes are blurring I feel the secret’s out And you smile behind my back Your mind’s made up And your heart is closed You might lend me your hand But your heart is shut away I dont know if you…

Romance with couplets

There used to be a time when I had a particular love for shayari; Have never been that proficient in Urdu to be able to write any myself, but from the age of text message forwards to selecting verses from my favourite ghazals, I happened to have compiled almost a diary-full of couplets. I am often stunned by the beauty of words – how once can fall in love with the feeling that the verses can bring. Recently, in the movie I have been raving about brought memories of this forgotten love back to life. Jab jab dard ka baadal chayaJab ghum ka saya lehrayaJab aansoo palkon tak ayaJab yeh…
